Cope Training July 2011 to Jan 2020
The Centre of Phytosanitary Excellence (COPE) was launched in October 2010 and since then has trained 2,877 from Kenya, Malawi, Uganda, Tanzania, DRC, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, South Africa, Ethiopia, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Botswana, Nigeria, Lesotho, Somali and others. In addition it has developed a curricula and also develops tailor made program/curricula; done regional PRA for Maize, Beans and Rice; further it has done in-country training and consultancy including successful phytosanitary conferences in 2016 and 2018.
The objective of COPE is to enhance capacity of Africa’s national Sanitary and Phytosanitary systems to protect national agriculture and increase ability to compete in international markets by meeting market requirements. COPE is positioned to serve as a sub-regional virtual centre and is already recognized by Regional Plant Protection Organizations such as AU-IAPSC and COMESA.
Centre for Phytosanitary Excellence (COPE) has a training manual and are currently undertaking the training not only in Kenya but in East and Central Africa.

The objectives of the training were to train the Somaliland technical staff about seed systems in Kenya so as to equip them with knowledge on seed certification and quality assurance process which will lead to competence in establishing seed system in their country. |

The training enhanced knowledge and skills needed to perform scouting, correct selection of pesticides, perform calibrations, representative sampling for pesticides residue analysis and correct dosing of crops. The need to ensure traceability through diligent record keeping was also emphasized. Key stakeholders in the sector were invited to make presentations. |

Practical session involved: practicals on DUS data scoring, Practical on NPT data scoring and a visit to Kenya Seed Company Nakuru for Processing Procedures. |
